I really like how each of the branches looks separate, but yet the whole thing comes together. It looks very old-school (VERY old school, as in, Medieval or older :D)
I'd say that it would help this if you took the texture that you made the background and integrate it into the picture. As it is, the background feels a little slapped on, so try to give the tree and the runes the kind of craggly feeling from the background. I'm not sure how clear I made myself, if you want me to try to explain better, let me know, but that's what I think when I see this.
Very nice job, very traditional. The artist comments were interesting to read.
